This Is Why The New 2011 Ford Mustang V6 Has A Speed Limiter Of 112mph

If you’re shopping for a track-day 2011-12 Ford Mustang V6 or think of renting one on a budget, you may be tempted to consider the 305 horsepower 2011-12 Mustang V-6 as a legitimate alternative to the Mustang GT. The V6 is lighter up front and will also handle better with less understeer. Lower cost aside, the new V-6 is almost as powerful as the previous generation’s 4.6-liter V-8, it gets stellar fuel economy and it’s cheaper to insure. Sure, it’s limited to a top speed of 112 miles per hour, but (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) there are ways around that like in performance tune or custom tuning on a dyno. This video we found on you tube shows the potential consequences of exceeding a manufacturer’s design specification. In the case of the Mustang V-6, the car is limited to 112 mph since its lightweight drive shaft is designed more for fuel economy than outright performance. not to mention the tires on the car are probably not ZR rated. Remove the electronic governor, and the V-6 Mustang will wind out past 135 miles per hour. Until the drive shaft explodes, that is, sending shrapnel up through the transmission tunnel and into the passenger compartment.
The driver of the Mustang in the video is lucky to be alive and uninjured, especially after ignoring the signs of impending driveline failure. That noise you hear at about 0:34 in? Like the vibration that was surely coming through the floorboard, that’s bad, and not something you should ignore.
We also don’t condone top speed testing on a public road, even a lightly-traveled one. Likewise, when driving at north of 120 miles per hour, we tend to keep both hands on the wheel, instead of one on a camera filming the speedometer. As the video illustrates, driving is deceptively easy, until something goes wrong. According to the original video we saw which has since been removed from your and was posted by the owner/driver of the car – he had severe damage to the floor pan – center console – drive train – gear box – shifter and exhaust system that was crushed by the out of control rotating driveshaft. moral of the story – upgrade the driveshaft and tires if you remove the speed limiter

NMRA Adds Coyote Class For The 2012 Season

ProMedia, parent company of the NMRA Ford Nationals all-Ford series, has announced a new heads-up drag racing class for the 2012 NMRA Keystone Automotive Ford Nationals season. Strange Engineering Coyote Stock Presented by 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords Magazine will be a spec-engine class, utilizing a sealed version of Ford’s newest powerplant, the 5.0-liter DOHC “Coyote” motor (carrying the unique part number M-6007-M50S) and utilize a spec, sealed processor (CM-12A650-A5LA).

The class will be open to all Ford vehicles, 1954 model-year and newer, and each competitor will be required to weigh-in at the same 3200 pounds. Competitors will compete on a true 10.5-inch tire and have a choice of a wide variety of Ford OE and TREMEC manual transmissions utilizing a single-disc diaphragm clutch, or can use the venerable C4 automatic transmission.

Coyote Stock was formed to provide an affordable way for both rookie and veteran drivers to be competitive in a heads-up class without having to undertake an involved, expensive engine program.

“Coyote Stock is a great way to return race cars to the track with an affordable engine package. It speaks to the original spirit of NMRA racing,” said Jesse Kershaw, Drag Racing and Competition Manager at Ford Racing. “The Coyote engine is about half the cost of a competitive Factory Stock engine and about one third the price of a Pure Street engine. It also requires far less maintenance.”
