Michael Matkosky’s Sweet Looking Retro Styled 89 Ford Mustang Notch Back

Well now for something completely different!

I don’t think we have ever seen another Mustang like it – Have You? – A 60’s Retro Notch!

According to Michael Matkosky his fox body Mustang car was built as a tribute to all the mid 60’s Mustangs. The Interior has been recovered in TMI’s Mustang Mach1 upholstery with an all new carpet headliner that has been painted in a custom red dye that matches the red band in the seat back.

The engine sits on top of a seriously Matkosky modified K member to accommodate the 4.6 swap into the Fox. The engine itself is a 2002 Ford 4.6L 2v that is fed by a 600 cfm Holley Street Avenger carburetor that is mounted on top of a 4.6L 2V Edelbrock intake manifold and the engine management is all controlled by MSD. The fuel system utilizes a custom made 16 gallon steel tank and a Holley HP125 fuel pump that is used to get the fuel up to that Holley Avenger.  Continue reading

2013 Cobra Jet Confirmed with a 5.0L & 5.8L Engine Option

Up until now we haven’t heard much about whether a 2013 Mustang Cobra Jet would be produced or not, with our only hint being a strange set of spy photos. Now we can indeed confirm that the Cobra Jet will be making a return for at least another year, as our sources at Ford Racing tell us that a revised 2013 model is already under development. Two test mules recently underwent durability testing at Milan Dragway (as seen in the photo gallery), a process that requires at least 50 passes down the drag strip.

The big news for the 2013 Cobra Jet will be the addition of the Coyote 5.0-liter V8 as an engine option that will be available in either naturally aspirated or supercharged form. Jesse Kershaw of Ford Racing tells that this powertrain, along with the supercharged 5.4-liter V8 already offered, will allow for drag racers to compete in a wider range of NHRA categories. “The goal with the next gen Cobra Jet is for all engine options to be NHRA Stock Eliminator legal where in 2010 and 2012 we had Super Stock only engine options,” he told us.

In addition to the option of the 5.0-liter V8, the 2013 Cobra Jet will also see a variety of updates from the 2012 model. “The Cobra Jet enthusiast should expect minor refinement all around the car from suspension, brake feel, steering, cage design and even seats,” Kershaw informed us. “We are looking at ways to cost-effectively take weight out of the Cobra Jet and are also paying close attention to the final price. Based on our research we know where the car needs to be performance and price wise.”

Expect to see the 2013 Mustang Cobra Jet debut at the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) show in December, with production scheduled for the summer of 2012.

More Ford Mustang Boss 302 Track Key News

The All New 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302, like most other new Ford vehicles, comes with a factory three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a five-year, 60,000-mile power train warranty. It also comes with what they call a Track Key, which is intended for off road “Race Use” Only. The Track key adds Trac Mode power train control software to the car for track use, providing full race calibration and two-stage launch control in addition to stock calibration, without compromising factory warranty* It uses a dual-path power train control module (PCM), and the TracKey software is installed after the vehicle is purchased and accessed only by the specially programmed vehicle Track key. No aftermarket chips or permanent modifications are made when TracKey is used, so it allows owners to return to the stock setting by starting the car with a regular key
Now word has it that some fine print reads” installing the TracKey on your new Boss may void your power train warranty”. Word has it that the Ford TracKey feature available on the Ford Mustang Boss 302 will come with some interesting fine print. According to Mustangs Daily, owners who opt to have TracKey installed at their local Ford dealer will have to endure a three-year, 36,000-mile powertrain warranty. That’s noticeably shorter than the five-year, 60,000-mile warranty that comes standard on the Mustang Boss 302. Of course, this might actually be seen as a benefit to a lot of TracKey purchasers, because the TracKey is specifically intended for track use. Having a warranty for a tracked car is well outside the norm–many warranties specifically exclude such use. It’s worth noting, too, that the fine print on the Laguna Seca package says it “may” void the vehicle’s warranty, and that it must be installed by the customer.
In addition, owners who decide to bolt on any extra performance modifications in conjunction with TracKey will see their warranty completely voided. Ford says that aftermarket modifications could cause severe engine damage.
Despite the shortened warranty, Ford doesn’t expect any reliability issues with TracKey. The company says that its engineers have done all of the necessary homework on the system. From the sound of things, Ford is simply protecting itself from abusive owners who may seek to take advantage of a race car with a warranty. We’ll learn more once Ford officially debuts TracKey at SEMA in Las Vegas in a few weeks.
